January 15- Martin Luther King Day-no school
Wishing you all a Happy New Year and hope that your break with family and friends was blessed! I got to spend some awesome family time in Mexico, swimming with whale sharks, snorkeling and happening across some baby turtles that had just been released. Fish, Turtles and Whales...Oh My! It was a great relaxing time and I am excited to start a new school year with the kids.
Before I start with curriculum updates, I would like to take a minute to thank all of the parents that help in our class. Our holiday party was so special because of all of the hard work and thought that our room parents put into the party and all other room parent jobs! The students had beautiful gifts to give, because of the hard work of our ceramic parents. The students also get to enjoy informative and fun art lessons, because of the the care and preparation that our art vista parents put into each lesson. Thank you all for all you do and your ongoing support!
Here are our curriculum udates:
In reading, 4th graders will be starting the Island of the Blue Dolphins and the 5th graders will be starting The Sign of the Beaver. Both novels correlate with our social studies units, and help to add a realistic fictional perspective. We are also continuing with Newsela, Time for Kids and Daily Science for non-fiction text. In writing, we continue to work on informational text, and learning how to combine two texts.
In math, 4th grade is mastering equivalent and comparing fractions. 5th grade is working on multiplying and dividing fractions. In science, 4th grade will learn about properties of energy and 5th grade will learn about sun, moon, stars and planets. In social studies, 4th grade will begin learning about ranchos and 5th grade is learning about the road to the American Revolution.
I think that is all the updates for now..back to watching the National Championship game. My best friend, who I coincidentally met in the 4th grade, lives in Georgia, her family are big DAWG fans) and they are at the game. I am very jealous...looks like a lot of fun!
Hope you have a great week!
