I can't believe that October is already here, though this cooler weather is convincing me! (Had to turn the heat on for a bit in in the classroom for the first time today!) We have had a wonderful beginning to the school year! The students are in a great routine, we have been looking at story elements and doing a lot of creative writing through a writing workshop format! We have also been incorporating reading and science as we have been busy studying both 4th and 5th grade life sciences. We have looked at food chains and webs, energy from food, animal adaptations, brain processing and senses, and the human digestive system, vision and muscles. We planted our "Taco Plants" in the school garden and have a nice herb windowsill garden in the classroom. We also participated in a webinar with a National Geographic explorer, using technology through San Jose based Zoom. The kids loved that fact that we could interact with other classrooms from California, Washington and Hawaii, and actually ask live questions. It was informative and fun.
In math, we have been focusing on place value and metric conversion, and we change our focus this week to multiplication (4th grade) and expressions and equations (5th grade)! Next week, we also begin our social studies unit on the regions of California (4th) and the United States (5th). Oh, and of course we had a great Pirate Day with fun STEAM activities had by all!
Have a great week!
