As we have returned home and back in our daily routine...I thought I would add my final take-aways from our week at science camp. Having been to science camp as a student and a high school camp counselor, I have my own fond memories of these experiences. Now attending as a teacher, I see that science camp is so much more than just science! Yes, the emphasis is on science, environments, and being responsible with our natural resources, taught by an incredibly caring staff. The students had fun and learned a lot of science!
However, and maybe more importantly, they learned to be independent, self thinkers navigating through social situations that can be uncomfortable. Sharing a room, being accountable for dinner responsibilities, going on hikes (even when they may have been tired) and finally having to do just about everything for themselves for the week! Kids who started off anxious, grew a lot and found that inner confidence to know that they are very capable of trying new things and overcoming fear! I personally have added more wonderful memories of science camp, now through a different lense! I hope that your students came away with their own wonderful memories and personal growth!
